I’ve always loved all things creative. As a kid, my favorite thing in the world was drawing my favorite cartoon character Garfield over and over again. I took art classes all through high school and then I took the next logical step and went to the University of Missouri-Columbia to study journalism.
I know. Crazy, right? But hear me out, I also loved writing and back in the day “you can’t make money from art” was a common refrain from family. I soon realized that making money from writing would be just as daunting. I decided that the best way to merge my love of art and writing while also making myself marketable was to major in advertising.
That decision took me on a wild ride that hasn’t stopped. After doing art direction internships at Draft (later DraftFCB, now just FCB) in New York City and JWT in Chicago, I landed at AbelsonTaylor (AT) doing art production. Then things got crazier. An associate web developer position opening up. Though I barely knew how to code, I applied and got the job!
Through the years with lots of practice and on-the-job training, I worked my way up the ranks, left AT, landed at Juice Pharma in NYC for a bit, then came back to AT as a senior developer.
While all of this was going on, I did a lot of freelance design & web work. I also launched an e-commerce store, Bon Bon Vie, through which I developed a love for social media, online marketing and branding. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to blog and do social media and community management for the YMCA of the USA.
